Pedestrian-Only Street Experiment Near Kaminarimon

Asakusa is one of the best areas in Tokyo for walking and sightseeing.

Around Kaminarimon Street, a pedestrian-only street experiment is currently being held.

  • Dates: January 17 (Sat), 18 (Sun), 29 (Thu), and 30 (Fri)
  • Time: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

During the times listed above, vehicle traffic is restricted, and the street becomes pedestrian-only.
This creates a safer and more comfortable space for people to walk.

This type of street is often called “hokosha tengoku” (pedestrian paradise) in Japan.
However, this event is a temporary pilot project, carried out to study future town planning.

Benefits for Visitors

During pedestrian-only hours, visitors can enjoy many benefits:

  • Walk safely without worrying about cars
  • Take photos and videos more easily
  • Enjoy the town’s atmosphere at a relaxed pace

Especially around Kaminarimon, Asakusa is an area where walking is the best way to experience its charm.

Why Walking with a Guide Makes the Experience Better

Asakusa is full of interesting stories and hidden meanings.

For example:

  • Why Kaminarimon has a large red lantern and Giant straw sandals
  • The history of Senso-ji Temple and the surrounding area
  • Places that are loved by local people

When you walk with a guide, Asakusa changes from just a sightseeing spot into a local experience.
Listening to stories while walking helps you understand the area more deeply.
