Super Cool Interaction! Tour Report: June 16th at Meiji Jingu and Harajuku Street

  • 2024.06.18

Hey everyone! When you’re traveling abroad, the best way to truly experience a country is by chatting with the locals. So why not strike up a conversation with people in Japan? “Oh, that sounds awesome! But this is my first time in Japan, and I don’t have any Japanese friends yet.” No worries! We’re Tokyo Free Walking Tour (TFWT), a fun and friendly non-profit volunteer guide group. We love sharing cool facts about Japanese history and culture, and meeting people from all over the world. And guess what? Our tours are 100% free—no tips, no fees, just pure fun! Our guides are a diverse bunch—office workers, freelancers, homemakers, retirees, you name it! Some have official tour guide licenses and speak excellent English, while others are just starting out and speak “Janglish” (Japanese English). The best part? We all love talking about Japanese culture and traditions with our international friends. Today, we split into four groups. My group had a lovely mother and son from Australia, a friendly gentleman from Singapore, and three amazing local guides: two middle-aged guys and a wonderful woman. That’s right, three guests and three guides! We had a blast chatting and sharing stories throughout the tour. […]

I hope you all had a good time and enjoyed interesting conversation with each other during the tour. As promised, some photos are attached to remember the fun times we had. The day of the tour was sunny and very hot. The rainy season in Japan usually lasts from early June to mid-July but it has not yet started even in mid-June this year. Speaking of the rainy season, do you know the representative flower that has been favored in Japan for a long time? Japanese hydrangeas are truly enchanting flowers that captivate with their delicate beauty and vibrant colors. Known as AJISAI in Japanese, these blossoms bloom in various shades of blue, pink, and purple, bringing colors into the melancholy rainy season. Visiting Japan during the hydrangea season is a truly magical experience. Many parks and gardens such as East gardens of the Imperial Palace, Ueno Park, and Meiji shrine are adorned with these stunning flowers, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere. Strolling through these places surrounded by the gentle […]

So far, more than 5,000 varieties have been created, and there is a wide variety of colors and shapes. The irises bloom only three days. At the East Garden of Imperial Palace, you can appreciate the ephemeral beauty of colorful clusters created with the utmost care so that different varieties are next to each other. About once every two months, the Imperial Guard Band holds an outdoor concert at lunchtime in the Garden. Concerts are held irregularly, so if you run into one, you’re lucky. On this day, there were 5 fun performances. The announcement of the song introduction is in Japanese, English and Chinese. We enjoyed an early […]

During the 90-minute stroll, we showcased some of the majestic Buddhist buildings and provided hands-on experiences. These included touching lucky charms, participating in purification rituals, and trying fortune-telling paper. We hope these experiences will be memorable for you. Almost at the same time as our Asakusa afternoon tour, our guide met expectant guests in front of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and the National Museum of Western Art.  These institutions serve as a cultural gateway to Ueno Park, which is often referred to as “the Village of Culture”.
