Autumn Leaves in Tokyo: Savoring Ginkgo Nuts and Sake
Tokyo is in the peak of autumn leaves. While the vibrant red maples are stunning, the ginkgo-lined avenues, gleaming in golden hues, create a beautiful contrast against the blue sky.
Ginkgo nuts are a special autumn flavor. While they are typically known for being served in chawanmushi (savory egg custard), during this season, some izakayas offer them grilled on their own for you to enjoy. Lightly salted and served with sake, they make for a quintessentially Japanese pairing. The bold flavor of ginkgo nuts may not appeal to everyone, but for adventurous foodies, they are worth a try. Even if you try grilled ginkgo nuts and find them not to your liking, the experience itself will still become a cherished memory of your autumn visit to Japan. (Actually, as a child, I couldn’t tolerate their unique taste. However, as I grew older, I began to appreciate such bold flavors. I’m still a Japanese person who can’t quite enjoy natto and umeboshi…)
Tokyo Free Walking Tour offers countless opportunities to enjoy autumn foliage and ginkgo trees. The iconic ginkgo-lined avenue near Tokyo Station pairs beautifully with the Imperial Palace East Garden tour, while the famous ginkgo-lined streets of Meiji Jingu Gaien complement the Meiji Shrine tour.
In Ueno and Asakusa, the striking combination of temples and autumn leaves creates a uniquely Japanese seasonal landscape. Join our tours to discover the beauty of Tokyo in autumn and create memories that will last a lifetime!
