By the way, on this day, roasted beans were being sold and a special stage was being prepared on the grounds of Sensoji Temple. We received questions on them from our guests.
During this period (from late January to mid-February), many Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam, and Malaysia celebrate the Lunar New Year, which fell on January 29th this year. Japan also used the lunar-solar calendar until 1872, but as part of its modernization, the solar calendar was adopted to suit Western countries.
Lunar New Year also marks the beginning of spring, and in Japan, the first day of spring is celebrated at this time. This year it falls on February 3rd. The day before that, the last day of winter, is “Setsubun”. On this day, there is a custom of throwing roasted beans to drive away evil spirits and misfortune, and people throw the beans inside and outside their homes while chanting, “Demons are outside, good fortune is inside.” On February 2nd, bean scattering was carried out at many shrines and temples including Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine.
Roasted beans are also sold at convenience stores, so why not try your hand at roasting them at your hotel? However, be sure to clean it properly!
