Ueno Park

Do you know that Ueno Park is also a treasure trove of historic architectures?

The facilities on each side of the exit of the Ueno Station Park Exit are the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan or Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall on the left and the National Museum of Western Art, which is a World Heritage, on the right.

They were designed by a master and disciple of architecture, and the two are in perfect harmony.  It is said that Ueno is the only one place in the world where buildings designed by a master and disciple locating side by side.

As our TFWT Ueno tour starts with topics of both buildings, it can be said they are Welcome Gate of our tour!

Now, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan on the left, designed by disciple; Kunio Maekawa, is the first authentic music hall in Japan dedicated for opera and classic music, built in 1961 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the founding of Tokyo.

He was really a person stimulated and learned by his master, Le Corbusier.  It’s supreme architectural and acoustic design have been maintained through renovation works until now.   Inside of the building is also lovely with milky way ceiling light and floor tiles imaging autumn leaves and so on.   To be loved further 50 years and more, it was decided to be closed for three years starting next year to upgrade prestigious position.  If you have time, why not step into the attractive lobby and “foyer” before the renovation?
