Thank you so much for joining our Meiji Jingu Shrine and Harajuku Tour on June 15, 2025. We welcomed 10 guests from the U.S., Mexico, Australia, and Singapore.

Japan’s rainy season, called “tsuyu,” usually starts in June and ends in mid-July. It does not rain all day every day, but there are frequent showers and high humidity. Many places look beautiful and green during this season, so don’t forget your umbrella and enjoy the fresh atmosphere!

About the word “tsuyu” (梅雨)
In Japanese, the word for the rainy season is “梅雨” (tsuyu).
Literally, it is made up of two Chinese characters:
- 梅 (ume) means plum.
- 雨 (ame) means rain.
The name comes from the fact that this season happens when plums (ume) ripen in Japan. Another explanation is that the damp, rainy weather helps plums grow well. So, “plum rain” is a poetic way to describe this time of year.
