The Somei-Yoshino Variety of Sakura Has Begun to Unfold: Asakusa and Ueno Park Tour, March 22

Asakusa

Today truly felt like a nice spring day. We were pleased to welcome as many as thirty-four guests on our walks.

Our sakura blooming gauge tells the flowers are still in the kaika, opening stage, which, towards the weekend, is followed by sanbu, 30 percent, gobu, 50 percent, and hachibu, 80 percent, eventually reaching the mankai stage, the 100 percent full bloom.

A week after mankai, all the petals will fall on the pedestrian path creating pink carpets, or drift away as pale wavy veils.

This ephemerality of sakura, especially that of the Somei-Yoshino variety runs as an undercurrent of the Japanese spirituality exerting influence on every aspect of art and literature as well as our everyday sensibilities. We love sakura. At the same, we are emotionally stirred by its transient trait. We hope to share this sentiment as we walk together.

Thank you very much again for joining us. We’d also appreciate it if you could share your valuable thoughts on TripAdvisor or our social media.

For our future guests, we are now in the peak season of sakura beauty. Join us for a walk and you will come across stunning blooms in every corner of the city.

To find our tour calendar, visit our web site at https://tfwt.jp. You will also find our tours in three more locations: Meiji Shrine & Harajuku, Yanaka & Nezu, and the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.

Below are the long-awaited photos for your memory. Scroll down to the end and enjoy finding your smiling faces!

This variety called weeping cherry lasts longer and has deeper color than Somei-Yoshino.
