Asakusa

A twilight tour in Asakusa on September 10 at 5pm

Asakusa

A twilight tour will be held on September 10 at 5pm. The Sensoji Temple is Tokyo ‘s oldest temple and one of the most visited temples in Japan. It’s packed with people during the day, but it’s not crowded and much quieter in the evening. By avoiding the congestion, we can enjoy seeing beautiful colors of twilight and sunset (expected at 5:56pm). Then the buildings, five-story pagoda and statues impressively shine when illuminated by light.

Although the main hall of the Sensoji Temple will be closed at 6pm, you can draw omikuji (a paper fortune) and pray just outside the building if you wish.

The first stop is the Culture Tourist Information Center which was designed by Kengo Kuma, one of the most popular architects in Japan. Enjoy looking at the Tokyo Sky Tree, Kaminarimon gate, Nakamise Shopping Street, Hozomon gate, five-story pagoda and the main hall from its rooftop (8th floor). The buildings amazingly emerge with lighting. Having a panoramic view from above is indeed a great fun.

The Nakamise Shopping Street is a street gallery. Although the shops on a 250-meter passage will close around 5pm, you will be impressed by the wonderful paintings of Asakusa’s history and its seasonal events and festivals on their shutters. You can’t see them during the day because the shops are open.

After the tour it’s a good idea to explore Japanese culture on nearby ‘Hoppi Street’ (2-3 minutes from the last destination). Tens of outdoor izakaya restaurants offer delicious food such as ‘Nikomi’(beef tendon stew) and refreshing drinks including ‘Hoppy’ (low alcohol beer) . It’ll be a nice experience to mingle with locals.
The tour features:
-Duration is 1.5 hours. Start at 5pm and finish around 6:30pm.
-We are volunteer guides, free of charge.

-This tour is a dry run and we are considering to make it a regular tour. The tour which we’ll hold at Ueno Park on the same day is expected to finish at around 3:30pm. The tour participants are welcomed to extend to this twilight tour in time for the start at 5pm on September 10 in Asakusa.
-This is a must-see spot in the evening. If you want to enjoy sightseeing in Tokyo, come and join us.
