Who we are
Tokyo Free Walking Tour® (TFWT) is a group of volunteers who conduct free guided tours in English. Currently there are tours for the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Asakusa, Meiji Shrine and Harajuku, and Ueno Park areas.
TFWT is registered under the Japanese government organization Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) since 2008. TFWT is a group run by over 100 members including licensed tour guides, professional interpreters and translators. TFWT does not operate for profit.
Why we conduct tours
The goal of TFWT is to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the world.
Modern Japanese are informed than ever on what is happening outside their country. At the same time, they now seem to be indifferent to their history, culture, and their identity. It is our belief that one must know about oneself, and express oneself, in order to appreciate and bridge the differences between others.
This is why we conduct free tours by volunteers to foreign tourists. When we explain about our history and culture, we are continuously challenged by new and different ideas from our guests. This enables us to reflect on ourselves from diverse aspects, and deepen our understanding of the world.
Through such activities, we contribute to true international relationship between Japan and the world.
