和敬清寂(Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku)

Do you like Maccha tea ? Have you experienced a tea ceremony ?
和敬清寂(Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku) is a Japanese four-character idiom that encapsulates the core principles of the Japanese tea ceremony known as Cha no Yu. Sen no Rkyu was a tea master who was active in 1522~1591. He reportedly came up with this phrase.
Here is a breakdown of each character:
• 和 (Wa): Harmony→It emphasizes creating a peaceful and unified atmosphere where everyone and everything coexists without conflict.
• 敬 (Kei): Respect→ This is the feeling of deep reverence and respect each other.
• 清 (Sei): Purity→ This means both physical and spiritual purity. The space and all the utensils are meticulously cleaned, symbolizing a cleansing of the heart and mind.
• 寂 (Jaku): Tranquility →This is the inner calm and quiet that is achieved through the other three principles.
In short, Wa-kei-sei-jaku is a philosophy for a complete and fulfilling life, not just for the tea ceremony. It teaches us to find harmony in our relationships, show respect to others, maintain a pure heart, and cultivate inner peace.
When you experience the tea ceremony, please remember” Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku” as Japanese culture.
