The first seven days in the beginning of the year is said “Osho-gatsu” or starting of the New Year. During this timing, “Shichi-fukujin-Meguri,” or go around Seven Lucky Gods is very popular in Japan. It is said, by visiting all of seven, you will be blessed with seven happiness and prevent seven misfortunes.
This custom started from Edo-period, around 400 years ago. Asakusa area is one of the most popular ones in Tokyo. Among seven in Asakusa-area, Senso-ji temple enshrine DAIKOKU-TEN and Asakusa-shurine has YEBIS. Go around all will take 7 km walk. This is also an excellent excises! Collection of “Goshu-in” which is the proof of visiting with Stamp and Calligraphy has also become really popular.
Each of them has their own specialties such as YEBIS bring luck on a big catch turned into a prayer for business prosperity and he is the only Japanese-origin deity among them. DAIKOKU-TEN is originally a Hindu god, who is an incarnation of Shiva, the deity of creation and destruction. He often sits on a bag of rice and he becomes known as a god of good harvest.
When you will have a chance to visit Japan during Osho-gatsu, why don’t you try!
