As you know, Japan is a country where earthquakes are frequent. You may be worried about experiencing an earthquake while you are in Japan, especially if you are in a building or walking around town.

The buildings at Sensoji Temple are very safe in this respect.

The large buildings in the center area are the Second Gate named “Hozomon Gate”, the Main Hall, and the Five-story Pagoda, and although all of them were built more than 50 years ago, they have been reinforced to meet the world’s most stringent earthquake resistance standards.

In addition, the roof tiles on these three buildings have been replaced from the traditional clay tiles to titanium tiles.  As a result, the weight of the tiles in the Main Hall has been reduced from 930 tons to 180 tons, which is one-fifth of the weight of the original tiles, further improving the earthquake resistance of the building and eliminating the risk of falling tiles and causing injury, making it an extremely safe place.

In order to reproduce the appearance of the tiles, the surface is blasted to reduce the gloss, and titanium tiles in three different colors are made and arranged to reproduce the natural color variations of ceramic tiles. Please enjoy the fusion of traditional architectural beauty and the latest technology when you visit Sensoji-temple.
