Do you know Japanese banknotes will be redesigned from July 3rd 2024?
It will be redesigned for the first time in two decades.
The government announced a redesign for ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 bank notes, adding new technology to prevent counterfeits.
The new ¥10,000 bill will feature Eiichi Shibusawa (1840-1931), a banker and business leader dubbed “the father of Japanese capitalism.” Shibusawa played a key role in modernizing the Japanese economy, The back side of the bill will feature an illustration of the Marunouchi side of red-brick Tokyo Station.

The ¥5,000 bill will feature Umeko Tsuda (1864-1929), the founder of Tsuda University in Tokyo, who studied in the U.S. and became a pioneer in the education of Japanese women in early 20th century. The back side will feature an illustration of wisteria flowers.

The ¥1,000 bill will feature Shibasaburo Kitasato (1853-1931), a bacteriologist who helped build the foundation for modern medical science in Japan. The opposite side will feature “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” the famous woodblock print by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
And in Ueno tour of Kiyomizu Kannondo Temple, we can see The Moon’s Pine drawn on ukiyo-e is a must-see.

Asakusa tour, we can purchase folding fan printed ukiyo-e depicted by Katsushika Hokusai.

Meiji Shrine tour explains ukiyo-e in Oota Memorial Museum of art.
In my case, when explaining Fujimi Yagura of Imperial Palace we associate Mount Fuji in the The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Because the name of Fujimi Yagura is originated from Mount Fuji.
Therefore all of our tour places are closely connected with ukiyo-e.

The current ¥1,000 bill will feature Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928), a bacteriologist who invented the vaccine of yellow fever. We can see his statue in Ueno park.

A portrait on the new bills will be rendered as a cutting-edge 3D technology as hologram, which the Finance Ministry said is a world first for currency.
“We will revamp the designs to ensure counterfeit prevention,” adding new materials will also be used for the 500 yen coin.
We can learn many things from Japanese banknotes by participating TFWT tour.
If you will use new Japanese banknotes, please remind tour places.
