Many thanks for joining Tokyo Free Walking Tour at Asakusa on April 5, 2025. We welcomed 13 guests from US, China, UK, Hong Kong and Bulgaria. It was a tremendous opportunity for us to meet wonderful guests from many countries and share interesting conversations. As promised, group photos and snapshots are attached so that you can remember the fun times we had during the tour.

The weather was nice for our tour. We saw a tea ceremony at Asakusa Shrine. Usually, tea ceremonies are held in specially prepared tea rooms, so you may wonder why this one was held outside. This style is called “Nodate”. It is a casual way to enjoy tea outdoors while appreciating nature, such as during cherry blossom viewing.

The tea ceremony has a long history. It began with culture brought from China during the Heian period. At that time, tea was considered a kind of medicine, and only a few people knew about it. Later, Sen no Rikyu, a famous tea master, made a big change to the tea ceremony. Until then, it had been enjoyed only by nobles and was seen as a formal type of communication. Rikyu developed the spirit of wabi-cha, which became the foundation of the modern tea ceremony.
