The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo’s most famous and historic summer events. This year, it will be held next weekend, on Saturday, July 26. The tradition dates back to 1733, during the Edo period, when fireworks were launched to honor the souls of the dead and to pray for an end to disease. Today, it is a huge celebration attracting nearly one million visitors. About 20,000 fireworks are launched from two sites along the Sumida River, creating a breathtaking display of lights and colors in the night sky. Many people wear yukata (a light cotton kimono) and enjoy classic street food such as yakisoba, takoyaki, and kakigori. The area around Asakusa becomes very lively, filled with both locals and tourists. It’s a great opportunity to experience traditional Japanese summer culture. If you are planning to attend, make sure to arrive early to save a good viewing spot, as it gets extremely crowded. Using public transportation is highly recommended. Also, bring a picnic sheet or something to sit on, and enjoy the festive atmosphere!
