Many thanks for joining Tokyo Free Walking Tour at Asakusa on September 6, 2025. We welcomed 13 guests from Czech, Mexico, Australia, Germany, USA and Vietnam. It was a tremendous opportunity for us to meet wonderful guests from many countries and share interesting conversations. As promised, group photos and snapshots are attached so that you can remember the fun times we had during the tour.

Recently, we’ve had a series of extremely hot days, but today the heat was a bit easier to handle, allowing everyone to enjoy the tour without worrying too much about heatstroke. Looking forward to the arrival of more comfortable, typical autumn weather!

In Japan, autumn is the season of Tsukimi, which means moon viewing. It usually takes place in September, when the full moon is at its most beautiful. The custom began over 1,000 years ago during the Heian period, when nobles gathered to admire the moon, compose poetry, and enjoy music. Later, it became a way for farmers to thank the moon for the harvest.

Typical decorations include pampas grass, believed to protect against evil, and tsukimi dango, round rice dumplings shaped like the full moon. Today, people celebrate in many ways. You may see Tsukimi soba or udon, noodles topped with an egg that looks like the moon, or even Tsukimi burgers at fast-food chains. Tsukimi is a gentle reminder to appreciate nature, enjoy seasonal food, and share special moments under the autumn moonlight. During the tour, you can hear stories about these Japanese events directly from us, native Japanese. These are stories you simply cannot find in books or on the internet.
