East Gardens of the Imperial Palace

Thank you for choosing our tour at East Garden of Imperial Palace on 19th June. We welcomed 10 guests from Germany, USA, Singapore, and Canada. I hope all of you enjoyed and shared interesting conversations with us during the tour. As promised, group photos and snapshots are attached to remember the fun times we had.

These days, instead of experiencing more rainy days, we are seeing an unusual amount of summer days. This reminds us of “Furin”, one of the seasonal features of summer. “Furin” is “wind chime” in English, combines the sounds of wind and bells. It is a traditional item that is loved by the Japanese. It is a small bell that is hung under eaves in summer. “Furin” was originally from China. It became popular 2000 years ago. It was used against evil spirits, but in modern times, it is used as something to make people feel cooler in hot summer. There are many types of wind chimes. Those which are made of beautiful colorful glasses are the most famous but there are also some made of metal and each makes a different sound depending on their material.

When the wind blows, the strips of paper and parts called ”Zetsu”that are hung from the wind chimes sway and give gentle tone and feeling of coolness in hot summer. Nowadays, few people hung wind chimes under their eaves .But, there are some temples and shrines that decorate many wind chimes. We can go there and enjoy the various sounds of these beloved summer features.
