By the way, the Tokyo Tower is one of Tokyo’s most popular landmark, and many visitors likely include it in their travel plans during their stay. But do you know that the light-up colors change depending on the day ?
I had a friend who recently came to Japan really looking forward to seeing the light-up of Tokyo Tower, but was disappointed because it wasn’t the orange and white he expected ;p
You can check the light-up color schedule at the official site (https://en.tokyotower.co.jp/lightup/), but in the meantime here are some facts about the light-ups of Tokyo Tower.
1) Lighting hours: from sunset until 12:00 AM (midnight), every night.
2) Seasonal Colors:
– Winter Version (October to early July): warm orange
– Summer Version (July to September): Silver
3) Aviation Law: The tower is painted in International Orange and White to comply with the Air Safety Regulations. At the time of its construction in the late 1950s, any structure exceeding a certain height had to be clearly marked with highly visible colors to prevent aircraft collisions.
4) Repainting Cycle: The entire tower is repainted approximately every five to seven years in a process that takes a year to complete.
5) The Painters: The painting is done entirely by hand using brushes and scaffolding constructed specifically to avoid interfering with the tower’s broadcasting antennas.
Other than its beauty, the orange and white are requirement for safety. So our thanks go out to the professionals who work in risky conditions to maintain the safety of our infrastructures and skies!
