The high temperature in Tokyo on this day reached 15°C, which was unusually warm for February.
It felt almost like spring and created perfect conditions for a stroll through the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.
In Japan, plum blossoms bloom first as a sign that spring is on its way, followed soon after by cherry blossoms. During this season, one of the special attractions of the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace is that you can enjoy both early-blooming cherry blossoms and plum blossoms at the same time.
Plum blossoms are known for their pleasant fragrance. When you get closer, you can notice their sweet and gentle scent. In contrast, cherry blossoms have little to no fragrance. There is also a difference in color: generally, plum blossoms tend to be a deeper pink, while cherry blossoms are usually a lighter shade.
However, depending on the variety, some plum blossoms are almost white, which can make them difficult to distinguish from cherry blossoms. In such cases, try looking at the tips of the petals. Plum petals are round and do not have a notch, whereas cherry blossom petals have a small split at the tip.
