In our Asakusa tour, we explain kabuki at Shiranami Gonin Otoko statue.
Because it is related to the Bentenmusume meo shiranami and the story was played in Kabuki.

Kabuki was designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. It is played only by male actors. Women’s roles are played by male actors, called “oyama”. The traditional Japanese form of performance originated in the Edo period. Originally it was performed by both women and men, but nowadays only male actors perform the plays. There are three appealing points of Kabuki. First is to experience Japanese traditions and culture, second is  the power of live music, and third is diverse programs and dramatic stories.

By the way have you watched the movie “National Treasure” ?

The film “National Treasure” is based on a novel by Shuichi Yoshida and is set in the world of Kabuki, depicting the protagonist’s life up to becoming a Living National Treasure. It was released on July 26, 2025, and has become an unprecedented hit for a live-action film. It is currently exceed 15 billion yen in box office revenue. This is the second highest record for a Japanese film.

If you haven’t watched the movie, don’t read any further. After watching the movie I have three impressions. First impression is that the actors who play the main characters, Kikuo and Shunsuke, are not real Kabuki actors, but they act as if they are real actors. Second is Kikuo and Shunsuke’s friendly rivalry and friendship. Third is Kikuo’s conflict between his lineage and his talent brought me to tears.
Many Kabuki plays appear in the film “National Treasure,” including “The Door of Seki,” “Renjishi,” “The Two Fuji Girls,” “The Two Dojoji Temples,” “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki,” and “The Heron Girl,” which are used in key scenes.

If you are interested in live Kabuki , please watch it in Kabukiza Theatre in Ginza.
”Kabukiza” is the only theater in the world that’s dedicated to Kabuki.
In the 5th floor of Kabukiza tower, we recommend a good matcha café and you can see the Japanese
style garden. The name of café is Zyugetsudou.
