Yesterday, many people gathered at Maiji Shrine for a memorial service for the dolls. In addition, there were many families celebrating Shichi-go-san(for boys aged three and five, for girls aged three and seven) and new born baby. It was very lively.

Today, October 6this the day of the Harvest Moon. The term “Harvest Moon” refers to the full moon visible on the night of the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar. In other words,” Jugo-ya” (literally, “Fifteenth Night”). The custom of admiring the Harvest Moon is said to have been introduced from China during the Heian period. In Japan, this tradition is associated with agricultural events and is sometimes called the “Imo Meigetsu” (literally, “Potato Moon”) because now is potato harvest season. Unfortunately, it is going to be cloudy tonight, but don’t worry!  We have other uniquely Japanese tradition, people also admire the moon on the night of the 13th day of the 9th month in the lunar calendar, a custom known as “Jūsan-ya” (literally, “Thirteenth Night”). This moon-viewing takes place after the Jugo-ya (Harvest Moon), and this year, it falls on November 2nd. Jūsan-ya is also called “Kuri Meigetsu” (“Chestnut Moon”) or “Mame Meigetsu” (“Bean Moon”). If you stay in Japan in around autumn, enjoy moon viewing. You might eat delicious potatoes and chestnuts in Japanese autumn cuisine.
