On October 18, Sensoji Temple in Asakusa will hold the Chrysanthemum Memorial Service (Kiku Kuyoe). This traditional ceremony, which has a long history, was first held in 1897.

During the ceremony, worshippers bring chrysanthemums as offerings to the temple. These flowers are then exchanged for other chrysanthemums that have already been blessed. The ritual takes place from morning to afternoon, accompanied by the chanting of the Kannon Sutra- a Buddhist scripture dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy.

It is believed that if you take one of these blessed chrysanthemums home, dry it in the shade, and place it under your pillow while you sleep, you will receive good fortune and protection. On this day only, visitors can also receive a special chrysanthemum-shaped charm (omamori), which is believed to bring long life and happiness.

The chrysanthemum, a flower that represents autumn has long been cherished in Japan. Along with the cherry blossom, it is regarded as one of Japan’s national flowers, and it also appears in the Imperial Family’s crest.

At the same time, the Asakusa Chrysanthemum Exhibition will be held on the temple grounds from mid-October to mid-November, featuring beautifully arranged flowers including cascade and bonsai style displays. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Japan’s seasonal beauty and traditional culture in the heart of Asakusa.
