June 30 marked the official start of summer at shrines across Japan, when people take part in Chinowa-Kuguri—the ancient ritual of passing through a giant wreath made of miscanthus grass to wash away the past six months’ impurities and pray for health and good fortune in the months ahead.
On the Asakusa morning tour, our guests were fortunate to witness the ritual one day early, on June 29, alongside the opening of the summer festival at Asakusa Shrine.
Together with the guests on our Ueno tour—who also experienced the purification fountain—we wish everyone good health and happiness in the coming months, regardless of what their Mikuji (paper fortunes) foretold.
