In Japan, the end of August through October has traditionally been typhoon season. Typhoons often brought strong winds and heavy rain, sometimes causing damage or suspensions of trains and flights, which meant travelers had to change their plans.

But in recent years, due to global warming, the weather has been changing. Besides the extreme summer heat, we now also see what is called a linear precipitation system. Unlike typhoons, which form in the Pacific Ocean and can be tracked as they slowly approach Japan, these rain bands suddenly form over the country itself and can bring very heavy rain in a short time.

This August, for example, sudden downpours caused flooding and transport disruptions in Kyushu and Tohoku but not limited in these areas. And in fact, such heavy rain can occur not only in those regions but in other parts of Japan as well. So, while it’s important to take care against heatstroke in the summer, it’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast frequently to avoid unexpected changes to your travel plans.

Once again, thank you so much for joining Tokyo Free Walking Tour. We always make efforts to improve our tours and highly appreciate your feedback on our TripAdvisor/Facebook etc. Your comments motivate us to continue our volunteer activities. Please tell your family and friends about how you enjoyed our tour.
